This section is about our Mum and Dad – Guat Hiong and Seng Poh.
In this account, we see how their lives intersected, long before they were even born. Both their fathers were already good friends before the war. Later on, both families lived close to each other, and their children often studied in the same schools.
As husband and wife, Mum and Dad complemented each other. They were alike and yet different in various ways. Dad was more extrovert, loved to travel, and host dinners for family and friends. Mum was more reserved, but her good interpersonal skills often led to relatives and colleagues seeking her advice. Dad was more technically inclined and studied engineering. Mum was more interested in the humanities and topped her cohort in Modern Language and Literature in Nanyang University. Both studied in Chinese-medium schools but became fluent in English due to their working environment. And both had long satisfying careers in the public sector – Dad at the Housing and Development Board, and Mum with the National University of Singapore. Along the way, they also raised three children in a loving family.
These are their stories.
